“I’m so stressed!” This is something you’ve probably heard people say loads of times. So what exactly is stress and what do we do when it shows up?
What is Stress?
Stress happens when you feel worried or overwhelmed about something. It can make it hard to control your emotions and leave you feeling like you are on an emotional rollercoaster! Not everyone experiences stress for the same reasons. Some people feel stressed when they have too much homework or need to take a test. Others get stressed when they are in crowded places or have to meet new people. Some people may even feel stress without knowing why, which can be pretty scary.
When we feel stressed, our brains send out special chemicals to tell our bodies we need to be extra careful and stay safe. But if we feel too much stress, these chemicals can make it hard to think clearly or make good choices. Stress doesn’t just affect your brain – it can also affect your whole body. You might get a stomachache or headache, have trouble eating or sleeping, or feel your heart beat faster. If you stay stressed for too long, it can even make you more likely to get sick!
Good Stress versus Bad Stress
Oh no, is there something wrong with me because I feel stressed? Nope! All of us experience stress at some point. Sometimes stress can even be a good thing! Our bodies can use stress as a warning system to keep us safe. You may get stressed out when a fire alarm is going off because your body is telling you that there is danger and to move to a safer place. Stress can also help to improve your performance. If you play sports, a little bit of stress can help focus your energy and keep your head in the game! Stress becomes a problem when you feel it all the time or when it becomes so intense that it stops you from being able to do things.
Ways to Manage Stress
The key to living with stress is to find ways to manage it so that it doesn’t take control of your life. There are many different ways people reduce their stress. Sometimes it is as easy as making sure you aren’t too busy to do things that make you happy and relaxed. Creativity and movement are also great for reducing stress, so you can try anything from painting a picture to riding a bike to help feel better!
Mindful breathing is one way to help reduce stress fast. First, take a big breath in through your nose like you are smelling a flower. Then slowly release it through your mouth as if blowing out a candle. This helps reset your brain so you can think clearly!
Sometimes stress becomes too much for us to handle alone. If you are feeling overwhelmed, it can help to talk to a trusted adult like a family member or a teacher. Sometimes people see a counselor when they are stressed, while others may need medicine to help keep it under control. You would go to a doctor if you get the flu or break your leg, right? In the same way, there is no reason to feel bad about seeking help for your stress!
While stress is a very normal part of being human, it can still be uncomfortable to experience, especially when it stops you from doing the things you want to do. It is important to find ways to manage your stress before it gets too overwhelming, so always pay attention to what is making you feel stressed and let others know if you need help!
