Doctors usually recommend a tonsillectomy for one of two reasons: the tonsils keep getting infected (recurrent tonsillitis or strep throat) even after antibiotics, or the tonsils are so large that they block a child's airway and disrupt sleep, causing snoring or pauses in breathing (sleep apnea). Taking the tonsils out in these cases can mean fewer sick days, better sleep, and an easier time breathing and swallowing.

A tonsillectomy is a short surgery, usually 20 to 30 minutes, done entirely through your child's open mouth — there are no cuts on the outside of the body. Your child is given general anesthesia first, so they're fully asleep and feel nothing. The surgeon (an ENT, or ear-nose-and-throat doctor) then gently removes the tonsils from the back of the throat. Most kids go home the same day.

Most children need about 7 to 14 days to recover. A sore throat is expected — many kids also feel pain in their ears, since the ear and throat share nerves. Pain is usually worst in the first few days and improves gradually. Your doctor will recommend a regular schedule of pain medicine (often alternating acetaminophen and ibuprofen) to keep your child comfortable, especially before meals and bedtime.

Cool, soft foods are easiest right after surgery — think popsicles, applesauce, yogurt, mashed potatoes, and smoothies. Staying hydrated is one of the most important parts of recovery, so keep offering small sips of water or ice chips throughout the day. Spicy, crunchy, or acidic foods (like citrus or chips) can irritate the throat and are best avoided for the first week or two. Most kids can return to school once pain is managed and they are eating and drinking normally, usually 7 to 10 days after surgery, but should avoid rough play, swimming, and sports for about two weeks or until their surgeon gives the okay.

Call your child's surgeon right away if you notice any bright red bleeding from the mouth or nose, a fever over 102°F (38.9°C), signs of dehydration (no wet diapers or urination for 8+ hours, dizziness, or no tears when crying), pain that isn't helped by medicine, or any trouble breathing. Bleeding can occasionally happen up to 10-14 days after surgery as the healing scabs come off, so it's worth knowing the warning signs throughout the whole recovery window — when in doubt, call.

No — tonsils are just one small part of the body's much larger immune system, so removing them doesn't weaken your child's ability to fight illness. In fact, most kids who have a tonsillectomy for recurrent infections or sleep apnea end up getting sick less often and sleeping better afterward, since the problem tonsils are no longer causing repeated infections or blocking their airway.
